First Blog Post

Hello I'm Eli Skaggs and I'm a junior on the tennis team here at Transy. A little bit about me I'm from Oldham county and I'm Pre-Med with a straight up biology major. The purpose of this blog is to share my journey through nanoscience with you all! This is my pet Coco she is a Husky who was given to me as a birthday present when I was 10 and she is 11 years old.

So the there are multiple reasons why I'm taking this course. The first reason is I need a bio elective to graduate on time, and this was caught my attention over the other bio electives for may term. The second and biggest reason in my opinion on why I wanted to take this class it because of the marvel movie Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. I'm a big movie fan and I saw all of  the ant man movies and I heard them talk about quantum physics and ever since then I've been interested in what is quantum physics and how does this apply to us. Now I know that quantum physics probably isn't as cool as the movie makes it out to be, and this class is about nanoscience not quantum physics, but both are really small and kind of similar. What really excites me about this field of nanoscience is that it's completely new to me and its so mind boggling how small we humans can look at a learn from. I would have never thought about how can we arrange atoms and things that are 10 nanometers long and spell IBM for example. The other thing that excites me is that this field is kind of new and there are so many cool advancements that can be made with this new technology. This will definitely help me in my future because as a biology major and being pre-med I will be exposed to new things like this and it will come up in my future physics classes and could possible be on the MCAT and in my med school classes.

I learned a lot from the first 3 days of class and all of it was incredibly cool. From Dr. Johnson I learned about if light is a wave or a particle. I had some prior knowledge to this from my physics class in high school, but I didn't know about the double-slit experiment for electrons and for waves. This experiment is really cool to learn about because I know that light can behave as both a particle and a wave, but I've never known why and this is the first experiment I've heard of that explains why it can act as both. From lab I learned about Avogadro's number/constant, and with this new knowledge I learned how to find the diameter of a copper and aluminum atom. From the book I learned about the history of nanoscience and we talked about this a little bit in class and it talked about it a lot in the book, but learning about the Lycurgus cup was super cool to me that nanoscience can make the cup appear to be two different colors.
